Ads in games

BlockRocker is another technology mash-up. This one is for the purpose of selling stuff. It’s a bit more like craigslist then ebay. I like that it is national instead of just local.

This is exactly the sort of thing that is totally wrong with information design. This product it nice in that it’s flexible and offers nice graphing/charting abilities in a web application. However their examples are the all wrong. Take a look at their animated charts. most of them are too slow and the animation doesn’t add any value at all. It actually takes away from it. When I first heard about the product I was exited at the idea of flash based chart to show real time data fluctuations or give feedback based on user set filters. Nope, visit diagnosis it’s just a powerpoint style screen loading wastefulness. Yuck!

So I was thinking…

How come no one is selling the rights of their virtual character for ads yet? Think about an online multiplayer shooter, health where you have a few top players who frequent. They could easily sell the rights to their avatar to either be skinned or look like a product in game. There are obvious leaps like in a multiplayer nascar game I should be able to make money if I’m a good enough driver in the virtual world.

I don’t think you could just sell any product this way. However if you were a hardcore gamer and you had your keyboard sponsor from Logitech, buy your Nostromo mouse from Belkin, and graphics card from nVidia.

I’m wondering if it isn’t the right time to just start an agency that specializes in this type of promotion already. I have the 3D modeling and texture mapping experience already.

It doesn’t seem to be to far of a reach for games since most games have ads in them already anyway.
